How pet insurance works
A policy for a cat or a dog pays for veterinary care for injuries and illnesses up to the sum insured, as well as online vet consultations. It sometimes includes the owner's liability — if a dog damages someone's property or hurts a person. Routine procedures such as vaccination, neutering, microchipping and check-ups are usually not covered.
Where the figures come from
We took prices from a Kommersant review (September 2026) in which insurers named the cost of their policies:
- tele-vet — RUB 1,500–2,500 a year, RUB 2,000 in the estimate;
- online consultations and accident treatment for a cat, sum insured RUB 200,000 — RUB 4,800 (Renaissance Insurance);
- a basic policy for injury and illness treatment — about RUB 10,000 for a cat and RUB 12,000 for a dog (Rosgosstrakh), hence the 1.2 factor for dogs;
- with liability and unexpected expenses — about RUB 12,000 and 14,000, i.e. roughly 18% more.
What else affects the price
- Sum insured and the limit per visit.
- Deductible: often RUB 1,000–2,000 per claim.
- Pet's age: for older animals some companies charge more or refuse cover.
- Dog breed and weight — with some insurers.
Why companies show "price on request"
The Bank of Russia does not report pet insurance as a separate line, so average premiums by company cannot be compared. The calculator shows a market benchmark, and Polis Re specialists will check specific insurers' prices on request.
Preliminary estimate
A dog, basic injury and illness policy, with owner's liability: 10,000 × 1.2 × 1.18 ≈ RUB 14,160 a year. Tele-vet for a cat — about RUB 2,000.
