About the company
JSC Insurance Medical Company Sakhamedstrakh was established in 1995 and works in the compulsory medical insurance (OMS) system of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). More than 160 employees and 93 insurance representatives assist insured people in every district of the republic; major branches operate in Neryungri and Mirny. Since 6 December 2016 the company has been a member of the All-Russian Union of Insurers.
The company issues OMS policies, keeps insured persons’ data up to date in the regional register, informs about health check-ups and helps participants of the special military operation obtain medical care. Information on its governing bodies and shareholders is temporarily not published under decisions of the Bank of Russia Board of Directors.
How the company helps insured people
An insurance medical organization is an intermediary between the patient, the OMS fund and clinics. For the insured it:
- issues the OMS policy and provides an extract on request;
- reminds insured people about health check-ups (dispanserizatsiya) and preventive examinations through its insurance representatives;
- checks the timing, scope and quality of medical care and carries out expert reviews following complaints;
- helps if free care is refused or a clinic demands payment for services covered by the state guarantee programme;
- advises on choosing a clinic and a doctor and on booking diagnostic tests.
If you need more than the OMS programme offers — clinics without queues or a wider range of services — consider voluntary medical insurance (DMS); employers can look at DMS for employees.
How to choose or change your health insurance company
An OMS policy (compulsory medical insurance) is free of charge — neither the insurance medical organization (SMO) nor a clinic may charge for it. You choose the company yourself, including when you get your first policy.
- You can switch SMO once per calendar year by applying no later than 1 November, or more often if you move or the company stops working in the OMS system.
- Applications are accepted at the chosen SMO’s office or policy issuing point, and via the Gosuslugi public services portal.
- Since 1 December 2022 the OMS policy is digital: the policy number is kept in the unified register of insured persons, and a paper extract is issued on request.
- The policy is valid throughout Russia but not abroad — for trips you need travel insurance.

According to the company, as of 1 January 2025 Sakhamedstrakh had 781,637 insured people — more than 85.5% of Yakutia’s population.
The money an SMO receives is not insurance premium in the usual sense: funds for medical care come from the regional OMS fund, so such companies are usually not ranked among insurers by premiums. The key indicator is the number of insured people.
