About the company

Sberbank Life Insurance Company LLC (brand: SberStrakhovanie Zhizni, "Sber Life Insurance") is the Sber group's insurer specialising in life and health cover. It has operated under the Sberbank brand since 2012: in January 2012 the bank acquired a life insurer, and in the autumn of that year the company received its current name.

According to the Bank of Russia, in 2025 Sber Life Insurance was the largest insurer in Russia by premiums, ranking first not only among life insurers but across the entire insurance market. The CEO is Igor Kobzar. The company is registered in Moscow.

Lines of insurance

The core business is endowment and investment-linked life insurance, unit-linked life insurance, borrower protection for consumer loans and mortgages, and risk products covering injury and illness. Policies are sold in Sberbank branches and online channels; some products are available in the SberBank Online app.

Key features

The company holds two Bank of Russia licences: for voluntary life insurance (SZh) and for voluntary personal insurance other than life (SL). It does not sell OSAGO, KASKO or property cover; within the Sber group these lines are written by a sister company, Sberbank Insurance.

Endowment and investment policies are long-term: on early termination the client usually receives only the surrender value, which may be lower than the premiums paid. During the cooling-off period (14 calendar days for most voluntary policies) you can cancel and get the premium back. Long-term life insurance contracts (signed from 2025 for at least 10 years) may qualify for the long-term savings tax deduction under Article 219.2 of the Tax Code — check the terms with the insurer.

Worth knowing: from 1 January 2027, under Federal Law No. 477-FZ of 26 December 2024, a guarantee scheme for life insurance payouts run by the Deposit Insurance Agency (DIA/ASV) comes into force. Until then there is no state guarantee on such policies, so check the insurer's reliability, ratings and early-termination terms before signing.

When an insured event occurs (death of the insured, disability, injury, a critical illness diagnosis or the maturity of a savings policy), notify the company by phone or via the online account and file a claim. You will usually need the recipient's passport, the policy, medical documents or a death certificate and bank details; heirs also need inheritance documents. The exact list and processing times are set out in the policy terms.

If you disagree with a refusal or the amount paid, first send a written complaint to the insurer. For claims of up to RUB 500,000 you must apply to the Financial Ombudsman before going to court; this is free of charge. You can also file a complaint with the Bank of Russia.
