How we calculate
Cargo insurance usually costs a fraction of a percent of the cargo value. The calculator uses the market average rate from Bank of Russia statistics for 2025: under 4.65 million policies with companies, premiums were 0.04% of the sum insured; under policies with sole traders, about 0.10%; with individuals, also about 0.10%. The cargo value is multiplied by this rate.
The average rate for companies is lower because large shippers insure their whole turnover under open covers and get volume discounts. For a one-off shipment, the sole trader rate is a better guide.
Choosing the sum insured
Cargo is usually insured for its invoice or contract value plus freight costs. If you sell goods on CIF or CIP terms under Incoterms 2020, the seller must insure the cargo for at least 110% of the contract value. For regular shipments an open cover is more convenient: it includes all consignments for the year, and the premium is based on actual turnover.
What affects the price
- Type of goods: fragile, perishable, valuable and theft-prone cargo costs more.
- Mode of transport and route: road, rail, sea, air; international or domestic.
- Terms: "all risks" or total loss only in case of a casualty.
- Packaging, security, deductible and claims history.
Estimates by company
The company coefficient is the ratio of its average premium per cargo policy to the market average (RUB 10,131) according to the Bank of Russia for 2025. If there is no data or the ratio falls outside 0.5–2.0, we show "price on request".
Preliminary estimate
A shipment worth RUB 5 million insured by a sole trader: 5,000,000 × 0.1037% ≈ RUB 5,200. For a company — about RUB 2,000.
