Do you need insurance for a trip to Armenia

Russian citizens do not need a visa for Armenia and can enter even with an internal passport. Before travelling, however, check with your airline which document it will accept at check-in. Tourists’ medical insurance is not checked on entry.

The OMS policy is not valid in Armenia, so if you fall ill or are injured you will have to pay for treatment yourself. Yerevan has many private clinics with good equipment and Russian-speaking doctors, but consultations, diagnostics and especially hospitalisation are paid for foreigners. In mountain areas healthcare is more basic, and in a serious situation the patient will have to be taken to the capital.

Which sum to choose

For a trip to Yerevan and classic sightseeing routes USD 30,000 is enough. If you plan skiing, hiking or are travelling with children, choose USD 50,000 — that covers both treatment and medical transportation home.

What to consider in Armenia

  • Mountains. Tsaghkadzor is the country’s main ski resort. Skiing requires the skiing or snowboarding option.
  • Trekking and excursions. The monasteries of Geghard, Tatev and Noravank, the gorges and trails of Dilijan — for mountain hikes add the active sports option. The Wings of Tatev cable car is an ordinary excursion, but ziplines and paragliding count as active sports.
  • Roads. Mountain serpentines and passes, with ice in winter. If you drive or rent a car, consider the accident option.
  • Sun and altitude. Yerevan lies at about 1,000 m, summers are hot and dry, and the sun at Lake Sevan is especially strong. It is easier to get sunburnt than it seems.
  • Brandy and wine. Tastings are part of almost any tour. Bear in mind that most plans do not cover incidents while intoxicated.
  • Food. Barbecue, fresh herbs, homemade cheeses and spring water — unfamiliar food sometimes causes stomach upsets. This is a standard insured event.

If your route is Armenia — Georgia, buy one policy for both countries. Remember that insurance has been mandatory for entering Georgia since 2026.

On polisre.ru there is no need to fill in a request and wait for a call. The calculator above the text compares prices from 16 insurance companies via Polis Re’s partner, the Cherehapa service. The policy is issued by the insurer you choose and sent straight to your e-mail.

  1. Set the dates, the number of travellers and their ages.
  2. Choose the sum insured and, if necessary, add skiing, trekking, accident cover, alcohol intoxication.
  3. Pick a plan by comparing price, deductible and assistance company.
  4. Enter your first and last name in Latin letters as in your international passport (if you do not have one, use standard transliteration), then pay by card.
  5. Receive the policy by e-mail and save the assistance phone number in your contacts.

What to do if something happens in Armenia

Your first step is a call to the assistance company whose phone number is shown in the policy. The assistance company will choose a clinic, approve the treatment and pay for it directly. If someone’s life is at risk, call the local ambulance at once and notify the assistance company as soon as you can.

  1. Call or message the assistance company (many accept requests via messengers); give the policy number, your full name, your location and what happened.
  2. Go to the clinic named by the assistance company and take your passport and policy with you.
  3. If you had to pay yourself, keep the doctor’s report, invoice, receipts and prescriptions: after you return, attach them to your claim to the insurance company.
