Do you need insurance for a trip to Indonesia and Bali

Russian citizens need a visa for a tourist trip to Indonesia: it can be obtained on arrival at the airport or applied for in advance as an electronic visa on arrival (e-VOA). Bali also charges a tourist levy for foreigners. Tourists are not required to show medical insurance on entry.

But Bali is one of the destinations where insurance is used most often. The island’s private international clinics are of a good standard and expensive, and after a serious injury the patient may be evacuated to Jakarta or abroad. Without a policy such costs are unaffordable for many travellers. Note that not all insurers issue policies for Indonesia, so the calculator may show fewer offers than for other countries.

Which sum to choose

We recommend at least USD 50,000. For divers, surfers, long winter stays and trips to remote islands — USD 100,000: medical evacuation from the islands is very expensive.

The main risks in Bali and Indonesia

  • Motorbikes. The most popular transport among tourists and the most common cause of injuries. Covered only with the option, a category A licence, a helmet and sobriety.
  • Surfing. Canggu, Uluwatu and Kuta are surf spots, and therefore places for reef and board injuries. You need the active sports option.
  • Diving. Nusa Penida, the Gili Islands, Komodo — add the diving option and decompression chamber treatment.
  • Volcanoes. A sunrise hike up Batur or climbing Rinjani on Lombok is trekking. Check whether it is covered and whether the plan includes search and rescue.
  • Dengue fever. Present all year round, especially in the rainy season. Add the option if the plan does not include it.
  • Animals. Bites and scratches from monkeys in Ubud and stray dogs require urgent rabies vaccination — this is emergency care, so contact the assistance company immediately.
  • Intestinal infections. “Bali belly” is the name for the stomach upset many tourists experience. Covered by basic plans.

Insured event in Indonesia: what to do

Keep the assistance phone number at hand: it is printed in the policy. An assistance company is a service company that organises help abroad on behalf of the insurer.

  1. Report the case before seeing a doctor: policy number, your details, address and symptoms.
  2. Get a referral to a clinic — treatment there is paid without your involvement, within the sum insured and taking the deductible into account.
  3. If the assistance company allows you to pay yourself, keep the medical report, invoices and receipts and file a claim for reimbursement after you return.
