What an annual multi-trip policy is

A standard travel insurance policy is bought for one trip with specific dates. A multi-trip policy works differently: it is valid for 365 days and covers any number of trips during that year. You do not need to buy a new policy before every departure; you simply take the one that is already in force.

The main limit is the number of insured days. This is the total number of days abroad that the cover applies to during the year. In the calculator you can choose one of the options: 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 180 or 365 days. Each trip uses days from the chosen limit, so it is important to estimate realistically how much time you actually spend travelling.

Who annual insurance suits

  • Frequent business travellers: no need to buy a policy each time and remember it at the last minute.
  • Holders of a multiple-entry Schengen visa who fly to Europe several times a year.
  • People who regularly visit relatives abroad or go on short weekend trips to neighbouring countries.
  • Families who travel several times a year: to the seaside in summer and to the mountains in winter.

If you go abroad once a year, a multi-trip policy is usually unnecessary: it is easier to buy insurance for that specific trip.

How to choose the insured day limit

Day limitWho it suits
15 or 30Several short trips a year: weekends, business meetings
45 or 60Regular business trips plus a couple of holidays
90Frequent travel throughout the year
180 or 365Constant travel for work or long stays abroad

The calculator on this page is already set to an annual policy with a 90-day limit, and the option is easy to change. Read carefully how the chosen insurer's terms count days and whether there are extra conditions for an individual trip.

Multi-trip policy and the Schengen visa

An annual policy is often bought together with a multiple-entry visa. Consulates usually check that the policy covers the first trip or the period of the visa, so confirm the exact requirement before submitting documents. Other conditions are the same as for a single-trip visa policy: cover of at least 30,000 EUR, the whole Schengen area, no deductible. More on the insurance for a visa and Schengen insurance pages.

Note that since 7 November 2025 the EU, as a rule, issues single-entry visas to Russian citizens. This makes a multi-trip policy especially convenient for those who already hold a multiple-entry visa and for those who often travel to countries without visa insurance requirements.

Territory: choose with a margin

An annual policy is not reissued for each trip, so it is worth choosing the territory with a margin. If you only travel to Europe, Schengen will do. If your routes vary, choose Worldwide: then you will not have to check whether a new country is covered.

It cannot be extended retroactively

If the day limit runs out or the policy expires, it cannot be extended retroactively. A new policy must be bought before your next trip starts. Keep an eye on the remaining days and the expiry date, especially towards the end of the year.

Sum insured and options

For Schengen trips the benchmark is from 30,000 EUR. If you plan to visit countries with expensive healthcare, choose a higher sum. For winter trips to the mountains, add active leisure; more on the ski insurance page. Frequent travellers will also benefit from flight delay, baggage and personal liability cover.

What to do if something happens

The procedure is the same on every trip: call the assistance company using the phone number in your policy, describe the situation and wait for a clinic to be approved. Do not pay for treatment yourself without approval, and keep documents and receipts. Detailed guidance is in what to do when an insured event occurs.
