Do you need insurance for a trip to Kyrgyzstan?
Kyrgyzstan is one of the simplest destinations for Russians. No visa is needed, and you can even enter with a Russian internal passport. You can stay in the country without additional formalities for up to 90 days within 180. Medical insurance is not mandatory for entry.
Because it is so easy, many people go to Issyk-Kul or the mountains feeling it is an "almost domestic" trip and forget an important detail: Russian compulsory health insurance (OMS) does not work abroad. If you fall ill or get injured, medical care will be paid. A travel medical insurance policy (known in Russia as VZR) closes this gap.
What to consider when buying a policy
- Sum insured. For a beach holiday and cities, USD 30,000 is enough. In the mountains, take a margin: evacuation from a trail costs more than a regular doctor's visit.
- Dates. The policy must cover every day, including travel there and back.
- Deductible. Without a deductible you have more peace of mind: the insurer pays the costs of an approved claim in full.
- Personal details. Fill them in carefully; if you travel with an internal passport, check when buying which document details to enter.
Issyk-Kul, mountains and horse tours: the risks of Kyrgyzstan
Holidays on Issyk-Kul
This high-mountain lake attracts visitors with sunshine and clear water. At altitude the sun is stronger than it seems, and the water stays cool even in summer. Sunburn, overheating and colds are common reasons to see a doctor. With children, emergency dental care is useful: it covers acute toothache.
Trekking and altitude
The Tian Shan is a paradise for hiking, but routes often climb high into the mountains. Altitude sickness, trail injuries and hypothermia require help where hospitals are far away. Add active leisure or mountain trekking to the policy and be sure to check in the rules up to what altitude the cover applies: this condition varies between insurers. If someone needs to be searched for or brought down, the Search and Rescue option is useful.
Skiing in Karakol
In winter, Karakol becomes a ski resort. Skiing and snowboarding must be added to the policy separately; otherwise an injury on the slope may be excluded. Read more on the ski insurance page.
Horse tours
Multi-day rides to high-mountain lakes are one of the country's signature experiences. Horse riding is covered only if horse riding is selected in the policy or the rules explicitly mention it.
Roads
Mountain roads can be narrow, with sharp bends and changes in altitude. The Accident option pays compensation for an injury regardless of treatment costs, and civil liability cover helps if you accidentally cause harm to other people.
How to choose a programme
For a week on Issyk-Kul, a medical programme of USD 30,000 without a deductible is enough. For trekking and horse tours, add sports options, accident cover and search and rescue. For a winter trip to Karakol, add skiing or snowboarding. People with chronic illnesses should include the Chronic Conditions option: flare-ups are more frequent at altitude. If something goes wrong
First, call the assistance company on the number in your policy. The operator will find out what happened, select a clinic and approve treatment or transport. Do not pay for treatment without approval: costs you pay on your own may not be reimbursed. Keep doctors' reports, invoices and receipts.
