Do you need insurance for Morocco?
Morocco is open to Russian citizens without a visa: you may stay in the country for up to 90 days. No medical policy is required on entry, and there is no mandatory insurance for tourists.
The advice to buy travel insurance has to do not with border rules but with the route itself. A typical trip around Morocco combines old medinas, the Atlas Mountains, the desert and the Atlantic coast, and each of these places has its own risks. Tourists pay for treatment on the spot, and Russian OMS (compulsory medical insurance) does not work abroad, so a policy protects your travel budget from unexpected medical bills.
What the policy should look like
There are no consular requirements for insurance, so base your choice on your route and your group.
- Currency and sum. A policy for Morocco is usually issued in US dollars; the starting sum in the calculator is USD 30,000. For mountain hikes or trips with children or elderly relatives, it is reasonable to consider programmes with a higher limit.
- Period. The policy must be valid from the day you fly out until the day you return, with no gaps between dates.
- Territory. If your route is combined, for example with a stop in Spain, choose a territory that includes all the countries of the trip. See the requirements for the European part on the page about insurance for Spain.
- Deductible. With frequent transfers and excursions a programme without a deductible is more convenient: you will not have to pay out of pocket for every doctor's visit.
Morocco by region: what to consider in your insurance
Atlas Mountains and trekking
Hiking routes in the Atlas attract many travellers. A short walk in the foothills and a multi-day hike along mountain trails are different things for an insurer: the latter usually counts as mountain trekking, which is a separate option. Tick it in the calculator and read in the policy terms what conditions apply to this activity. Medical transport matters especially in the mountains: the nearest clinic can be far away.
Surfing on the Atlantic
Morocco's Atlantic coast has long been known to surfers. For an insurance company this is active leisure: if the option is not selected, an injury on a board may be excluded. If you plan lessons or board rental, include surfing in your programme in advance.
The desert
A night in a camp among the dunes, jeep and camel rides usually become the highlight of the trip. Keep in mind the daytime heat, the sharp drop in temperature at night and the risk of dehydration. Quad biking and camel rides are best covered with the active leisure option.
Heat, water and food
Intestinal infections remain one of the most common reasons tourists in North Africa see a doctor. Drink bottled water, be careful with street food, and call the assistance company at the first serious symptoms. For long days in the sun, the calculator has an option covering sunburn.
How to choose the sum and options
- Cities and the coast. Basic medical programme, emergency dental care, baggage insurance.
- Mountains. Mountain trekking, accident cover, a sum above the starting level.
- Surf trip. Active leisure including surfing, personal liability in case you injure someone with your board.
- Family or older travellers. Chronic conditions option, early return, a higher limit.
- Package with flights. Trip cancellation and flight delay if tickets and hotels are paid in advance.
If you are comparing destinations, see the pages about insurance for Tunisia and for Egypt; general rules for choosing a policy are collected in the travel insurance section.
If you fall ill or get injured
The main rule: before going to a doctor, contact the insurer.
- Call the assistance company on the number given in your policy. State your policy number and where you are, and describe the symptoms.
- The operator will choose a clinic and approve the treatment. Without such approval, do not pay for treatment yourself, or the costs may not be reimbursed.
- Collect documents: medical reports, invoices, receipts for medicines.
- If payment on the spot was approved by the assistance company, file a compensation claim after you return.
